Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage combined with Low Level Laser Therapy treating Lymphoedema in Streatham

Lymphoedema (British term) or Lymphedema (American/International term) refers to the large swelling and fluid retention that can affect one or more limbs, which often occurs as a result of surgery to the Lymph Nodes during cancer treatment.

At Leigham Practice we combine the skills of Elena Spinelli, our highly experienced massage therapist who is a registered Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) therapist, with Low Level Laser Therapy (also known as LLLT, Photobiomodulation, PBM or Cold Laser), a treatment without pain or side effects, to maximise the benefit of Lymphoedema Treatment.

Described my Macmillan Cancer Support as “an important part of lymphoedema treatment” Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses specific massage techniques to help drainage of lymph and fluid from the affects arm or leg. Manual Lymphatic Drainage should be carried out by people with specialist training, such as our experienced massage therapist, Elena Spinelli, whose training is accredited with the Federation of Holistic Therapists. Elena is also one of the very few MLD therapists in the country also using Low Level Laser Therapy that our practice has been using for over 19 years to treat a wide range of conditions without drugs or side-effects.

Low Level Laser Therapy is evidence based in peer-reviewed, respected medical journals from around the world, such as BMC Cancer and Pubmed. Laser Therapy is also mentioned at the bottom of the Macmillan Cancer Support page on treatment.

Our combined treatment involves taking measurements of the circumference of the affected limb so that progress can be monitored from an objective perspective. Elena also records her patient’s goals for treatment – something we can look back on following treatment.

Our treatment is designed for rapid early improvements and sustained, long-term results and initially given twice weekly for two weeks, then reducing to once a week, then once a fortnight, then once a month as treatment progresses. Ultimately, our goal is to stop therapy as soon as long lasting effects are being achieved.

We offer courses for some of our therapies, including our combined MLD+LLLT treatment, as a 7th massage is included complimentary when 6 massages are pre-paid.

Please contact our team to discuss booking for treatment with Elena, or with any other enquiry.
