Leigham Practice has been using Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for over 20 years treating a wide variety of health problems and is one of London’s most experienced centres in what is now one of the fastest growing sectors of healthcare. Treatment is safe, painless, and can kick-start or speed up the body’s own natural processes of healing, repair and recovery. The effects are photo-biochemical, not thermal.
LLLT achieves improved outcomes in the treatment of:
Besides direct healing applications, LLLT also provides a way of providing acupuncture without the use of needles. It is perfect for people who would very much like acupuncture if it weren’t for the thought of the needles.
How does it work?
The physiological effects of laser therapy have been extensively researched. Particular wavelengths of light stimulate the body’s healing cells: initial absorption by the mitochondria leads to increased production of ATP and increased fibroblast cell proliferation and migration, with modulation of cytokine levels, growth factors, inflammatory mediators and increased tissue oxygenation – all part of the natural healing process.
Essentially, by directly treating the damaged tissue with light, LLLT helps the body to heal itself. It is especially effective for chronic conditions, or where the immune system is compromised, as it can also re-start a stalled healing process.
Besides the local cellular effects, research on LLLT has showed both enhanced levels of endorphin release and the suppression of pain messages previously sent to the brain.
Combining these effects with those from its use in stimulating acupuncture points and ‘trigger’ points, low level laser is an excellent therapy for treating pain and wide variety of problems, however it not just a painkiller. It actually heals.
Probes are positioned onto the skin at particular points on, or relating, to the damaged area and light, which is controlled for wavelength, power, pulsing rate and duration, passes into the tissue. If the problem is a skin condition, we will photograph the area to chart your improvements. If you are in pain, we will reassess you at each appointment. Ultimately, the best assessment of your improvements will come from you.
LLLT is not considered safe during pregnancy. LLLT is unsuitable for people taking immune-suppressant drugs for life-threatening reasons, such as those with organ transplants.
Established & Safe
Laser therapy is extremely safe. Low level lasers are used to treat a wide variety of conditions in medical organisations across the world. The low intensity laser beam does not cut or burn and has no side effects, other than the feeling of relaxation. Laser goggles are worn as precautionary eye protection.
