Podiatry

Types of foot problems treated.

People come to podiatry for many reasons. In the simplest instances it may be for some advice about a problem, or for a basic foot check, as you may get your teeth checked. Some people come to podiatrists for a ‘medical pedicure’ where mild problems such as hard skin, corns or callus, dry or cracked skin, or ridged/, thickened or in-grown nails are a problem.

Problems can occur in the feet because of what we do to them; through wearing shoes and through sport, activity or occupation. We treat injuries and problems that occur as a result, looking at the underlying reasons that problems occur and offering preventative advice or treatment where appropriate.

Potentially, the feet can be affected by any illness that affects skin, blood, bones and muscles, but there are also many general health problems that can specifically affect the feet, such as diabetes, arthritic and rheumatic conditions. We care for foot problems and aim to treat problems before they develop. We can provide insoles to support and protect the feet from problems and injury, and monitor both the foot health and general health of our clients.

Then there are the large number of neurological conditions that affect walking and balance. We treat and advise exercise programs, and manufacture or prescribe orthotics (insoles which improve walking or protect the feet from areas of high pressure) to balance and assist mobility.

There are also many problems related to the structure, mechanics or function of the feet (how the feet support weight when we stand or move), that can cause foot, leg or pustural problems which many of us inherit.

Many types of medication affect the feet, such as steroid, anticoagulant or chemotherapy.

Many foot problems have a biomechanical or surgical solution. Where these may be considered our podiatrists can discuss available options and refer to our specialists.

Whatever the problem, our team can assess, diagnose, advise and treat the majority of common conditions affecting the feet and legs. Our podiatrists are able to use a wide variety of equipment and techniques to provide a complete foot care service. Even the most painful foot problems are often dealt with in complete comfort in a professional setting.

We have no hesitation in saying our specialists are at the forefront of their profession. If you would like more information about foot problems the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists has a public information section which contains a wealth of information, or call us for further help.
