Acupuncture for Female Health

Please download our leaflet pdf: Female Health if you are pushed for time, otherwise please read on.

Acupuncture has been used with great success in the treatment of a wide range of female health problems. Because of the holistic approach, which takes into account the person as a whole, acupuncture can offer treatment for a range of different conditions at the same time.

Many female health problems are influenced and affected by circulating hormones, which in turn can lead to other problems and symptoms. Acupuncture is known not only to have wide reaching physiological effects, but also has psychological and emotional effects, which are essential components of recovery, relief and well-being.

It is important to stress that some of the conditions can help can be associated with an underlying medical condition, and it is important to eliminate a potentially serious medical condition by talking to your GP. However, once underlying conditions have been eliminated, acupuncture can provide great relief, without drugs, for a group of problems difficult to relieve by mainstream medical approaches.

Our team can provide autonomous treatments for many problems, or work together with medical approaches as appropriate. Our goal is simply to restore your health in the most effective way possible.

We have pulled together some of the conditions treated at the Leigham Practice and hope that we can be of help should you feel we are needed.

Regulation of Menstrual Cycle

One of the key areas of restoring balance is to regulate the menstrual cycle. Irregular periods are associated with irregular everything else, and it is often this lack of predictability that can cause much stress and anxiety, which can then further disturb the cycle. There are also many health problems that will affect the menstrual cycle, such as low or high weight, thyroid problems, stress, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), and others.

Our acupuncturists seek to influence the cause of the problem and restore balance. Regulation of the cycle bring about less fluctuation of symptoms and restoration of calmness. Obviously, more predictable monthly cycles mean that natural childbirth control will be more reliable, and this regulation will also help people trying to conceive ( pdf: Open 'Acupuncture-Fertility').

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Premenstrual Tension (PMT)

PMS and PMT are used interchangeably and cause mood swings, affecting quality of life. Many women also describe physical problems such as tender breasts, joint pain and headaches.

A more severe form is termed Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). Medical treatments may include regulation of hormones using contraceptive pills, unhelpful if planning a pregnancy, or via antidepressants.

Our therapists can have a major impact in changing people’s lives without medication and side effects.

Heavy bleeding (menorrhagia)

Heavy bleeding interferes with a woman’s physical, emotional, social and quality of life. It can be associated with underlying conditions such as Fibroids or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which require medical assessment. Sometimes thyroid problems may be related.

The holistic nature of acupuncture means that our team aim to reduce many symptoms through restoration of balance and regulation.

Abdominal Pain (Dysmenorrhoea)

If this causes problems in teenage years or early 20’s this is not usually associated with an underlying condition and often improves over time. If this becomes a problem in the 30’s or 40’s it may be associated with an underlying condition. Your GP will be able to help identify any possible causes.

Our acupuncturists provide support for women suffering pain and work alongside drug therapies and medical approaches to relieve symptoms and promote recovery.

Menopause

For many women Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is used to try and assist the transition through the menopause.

Our acupuncturists offer an alternative for women wishing to avoid prescription medication and are looking for a treatment with a low propensity for side effects.
